A Terry Sanford High School student is charged with having a gun on campus, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy T. Scott, a school resource officer, responded to a call of a weapon on campus at the school at 2301 Fort Bragg Road, the Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
A student observed a partially exposed gun in a student's unzipped fanny pack and notified the school resource officer on campus, the release said.
Scott found an unloaded 9 mm Kahr handgun and seven loose bullets, the release said.
The student was taken into custody without incident.
The student is being charged with possession of a firearm on campus, the release said.
The case is in the hands of the Department of Juvenile Justice, which will determine the appropriate course of action, the release said.
In a statement Tuesday, the Cumberland County School system said the safety of all students and staff is its top priority.
“Today, a student brought an unloaded gun on Terry Sanford High School's campus,’’ the school system said. “As soon as school officials learned about this situation, they immediately acted and notified law enforcement to investigate. Thanks to the quick actions of students, staff and law enforcement, the situation was resolved without incident.’’
