ShotSpotter representatives to host public forums on gunshot detection system

Posted

Representatives of ShotSpotter will be in Fayetteville next week for three public forums to answer questions about the gunshot detection technology, according to a city news release.

The information sessions will be open to the public both in person and online, the release said.

The schedule for the sessions is:

  • 6 p.m. Dec. 7, Smith Recreation Center.
  • 6 p.m. Dec. 8, Kiwanis Recreation Center.
  • Noon Dec. 9 online at Zoom webinar link. The password is 765720.

ShotSpotter representatives will explain how the service works and take questions from the public, the release said.

Each session is scheduled to last one hour.

On Nov. 15, the City Council voted 6-4 to proceed with implementing the gunshot-reporting technology.

The council authorized the city manager to pursue a contract with ShotSpotter after holding three public forums.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have implemented technology tools to help reduce gun violence. One of those tools is an acoustic gunshot detection system designed to detect and verify when and where shots are fired and to automatically notify police dispatchers.

But skeptics say the technology is no more effective than a 911 call from a resident or business.
