Spring Lake board to get update on parks, rec transition

Posted

SPRING LAKE — The Spring Lake Board of Aldermen is expected to hear an update about the parks and recreation and senior center transition to the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Parks & Recreation at its regularly scheduled work session Monday night.

The board meets at 6 p.m. in the Grady Howard conference room at Spring Lake Town Hall.

The Fayetteville-Cumberland County Parks & Recreation merger took effect Nov. 13, officially marking the partnership between the town and county, according to Mayor Kia Anthony.

Anthony said the cost savings would be $100,000, and the town will still be in control of all real property. The management of the facilities and staff members will be with the county.

Spring Lake has a multi-purpose community center along with the senior center, five parks, a splash pad, two basketball courts and two tennis courts.

Anthony said the town facilities and parks would be receiving an upgrade, and that Spring Lake children could now participate in competitions throughout the county system.

Also on the agenda are presentations by Julian Stackhaus to update the board on the activities of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and a code enforcement update by code enforcement officer Danny Eudy.

David Erwin, who serves as the accounting and financial management advisor for the N.C. Department of State Treasurer and the town finance officer, is expected to give an overview of the monthly finance reports from September and October.

Other items on the agenda include an update on the town’s organizational chart, the Boys & Girls Club contract and the town historian. The agenda does not say what the discussion about town historian will be.

Howard B. Pate Jr. was appointed as the town’s first honorary town historian in 1994 in recognition of his knowledge and preservation of town history. He was postmaster in Spring Lake for more than 30 years and served as one of the first board members for the Greater Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce.

He and the current town historian, Jami McLaughlin, co-wrote a book together in 2004 titled “Images of America: Spring Lake, NC.’’ McLaughlin helped Pate self-publish a second book titled “Spring Lake: A Brief History’’ in 2005.

After Pate’s death in 2016, McLaughlin was given the honorary title and position of town historian. McLaughlin covers Spring Lake for CityView.

The board is also expected to go into closed session citing N.C. General Statutes for attorney-client privilege and personnel.
