North Carolina is sending $37.9 million in loans to public utilities in Cumberland County to improve drinking water and sewer infrastructure, Gov. Josh Stein announced on Thursday.
The loans are for Spring Lake, the Fayetteville Public Works Commission, and the Aqua North Carolina water company.
They are part of $244 million in grants and loans being distributed to 45 projects statewide to help communities, Stein’s office said in a news release.
“The State Water Infrastructure Authority (SWIA) approved awards on July 15 to help cities, towns, and counties strengthen infrastructure to better withstand future storms, improve existing drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, reduce forever chemicals contamination, and identify and replace lead pipes,” the governor’s office said.
The awards for Cumberland County:
- Aqua won two loans, totalling just under $2 million, to rehabilitate two drinking water wells.
- PWC won a $14.4 million loan for electrical upgrades at a sewer lift station.
- PWC won a $16.5 million loan for expansion of the Rockfish Creek Water Reclamation Facility, a sewage treatment plant.
- Spring Lake won a loan of $3.4 million for sewer system improvements and a $1.6 million loan for drinking water system improvements.
“These new projects will make towns’ water systems more resilient, protect residents from forever chemicals, and make North Carolina’s communities safer, stronger, and healthier for years to come,” Stein said.
