A staff report
Eighth-grade STEM students at Seventy-First Classical Middle School launched rockets that they "made from scratch" on Wednesday afternoon in the back lawn of the main school building.
The hands-on activity required the students to design and build their own rockets, according to a news release from Cumberland County Schools.
Their teachers said that launching a rocket could be the bridge needed for students to explore a career as an engineer, the news release said.
In January, Seventy-First Classical Middle was the secondary winner in the STARward STEM Design Expo Challenge, which means they will travel to NASA headquarters later this spring to watch spacecraft blast off with their winning STEM project.
