Summer Fun: Choosing the Right Camp

         The summer equinox is almost upon us! If you’re a parent searching for fun things your child can do during the summer, look no further. This is the ultimate list of summer fun for kids of all ages! Keeping children busy and active are some of the most important guidelines for an enriching summer. From athletics to faith, here are more than 15 summer camps that your child will enjoy.


 Fayetteville Cumberland Parks & Recreation


            With a large variety of sports from tennis to rugby, help your child reach their athletic goals and have a whole lot of fun while doing it! These various camps are perfect for ages seven to 17 years.

Omega Gymnastics


            This camp will teach your child the fundamentals of gymnastics. Grouped according to age and skill, the campers will rotate to a minimum of four pieces of equipment everyday for gymnastic instruction. This camp is full of plenty of other fun-filled activities, which may include swimming, bowling and skating.

The Little Gym of Fayetteville


            Catering specifically to the younger crowd, ages three to eight, this camp is the perfect way for young children to participate in physical activities to burn energy, build flexibility and develop balance. With plenty of learning and active thinking, this program nurtures problem-solving abilities and creative expression.

Fayetteville State University Swim Camp


            The FSU swim camp is for ages three to 18. Lessons will be held in the Olympic-size pool and instruction will be available for beginner, intermediate or advanced swimmers. Whether it’s learning to get comfortable in the water or training for a swim team, this camp is ideal for the swimmer in your family. The camp is affiliated with USA Swimming and the Fayetteville Aquatics Swim Team.

NC Spurs Football (Soccer) Camps


            Fayetteville Academy soccer coaches Andrew McCarthy and Jimmy Maher lead this elite football camp for youth. Dates are ongoing throughout the summer. Find out more by visiting their website.

Methodist University Summer Camps


            Methodist University is hosting a variety of athletic camps (day and overnight) including football, baseball, volleyball, golf and more. Music camps and academic camps will also be held.


Creative and Performing Arts

 Workshop Music Lesson Academy


            If your child is interested in performing arts and music, the Workshop Music Lesson Academy could be the highlight of their summer. With activities such as music theory, piano, poetry, painting, dance and computer lab, your child will cultivate their artistic and musical talents.


Gilbert Theater


            Fayetteville’s own classical and contemporary theater is offering acting lessons this summer. The students of this camp will enjoy a diverse week of improvisation, comedy, acting and movement classes. At the end of the session, families and friends are invited to the final showcase, which focuses on all of the skills the children learned at camp! This camp welcomes ages six to 17.

            Area dance schools hold lessons in ballet, tap, contemporary, hip-hop and other forms of dance throughout the summer, with regular classes and summer intensives. Check their respective websites for more details and schedules.

Cape Fear Studios & Gallery


            Check out Cape Fear Studios summer camp list online. They will be offering classes on printmaking, mask making, painting with oils and more. New classes will be offered as it gets closer to summer, so please check the website!


 Child & Youth Program National Guard


            As an important part of the National Guard, the Child and Youth Program (CYP) offers a comprehensive approach to family readiness. Its fun activities are designed to “promote positive youth development, mitigate risky behaviors, enhance resilience, develop positive coping strategies and assist our National Guard youth in reaching their full potential as the next generation of leaders.” The campers will receive and enriching program full of sports, leadership, health, arts, mentoring and life skills.

Great Oak Youth Development Centers


            The goal of this summer camp is to improve skills in subject areas such as problem solving, comprehension and increased confidence. This camp will teach your child independence that will enable him or her to think more deeply and more critically.




 Camp Rockfish


            This center is everything from a sleepover camp, day camp to a retreat destination. Rockfish proclaims itself as “a welcoming place for all types of visitors: from those here for a business conference, to youth on their confirmation retreat, to boy scouts on their first tent camping experience. All groups receive our highest level of Christian hospitality and openness to share God’s love.”

Saint Ann Neighborhood Youth Center 


            The Saint Ann Neighborhood Youth Center is a collaborative effort within the church and school to provide educational support to area students and their families.

 Fayetteville Cumberland Parks & Recreation


            The FCPR has an abundance of adventure and outdoor camps available. If your child wants to be a trailblazer, sign them up for these exciting and stimulating programs that include activities such as fishing, hiking and boating.


Camp Dixie


            This non-profit camp is located just south of Fayetteville in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Set on a small lake, Camp Dixie provides lodging and an abundance of recreational opportunities.

Special Needs/Disability

            The SPADES Summer Adventures and Camp Challenge via the Fayetteville Cumberland Parks & Recreation offer an exciting summer for adults and children with disabilities.


 Fayetteville Academy Summer Odyssey


            This summer program offers an abundance of small class sizes and varied experiences that will “foster creativity and a love for learning.” With an assorted set of classes for students ages three through high school, this Fayetteville Academy summer program will provide an educational and fun-filled summer for children. 

Summerscapes at FTCC


            Fayetteville Technical Community College offers a variety of summer day camps including, but not limited to, financial planning, teen yoga, public speaking and so much more.


 Camp Pinewood


            This camp is tucked away in the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains of West North Carolina. Nestled in a private, beautifully wooded lakeside setting, this program is sure to fill your child’s wilderness needs.

YMCA Camp Kanata


            Offering overnight camp, day camp or weekend camp, make this YMCA getaway your child’s summer destination. Located in Wake Forest, North Carolina this camp is no more than two hours from Fayetteville.


Gwynn Valley


            At this camp, your child will receive a diverse and exciting summer full of activities such as: farm work, horseback riding, gardening, pioneer crafting, nature study and sports.
