Dedicating state highway bridges in memory of N.C. State Highway Patrol troopers who died in the line of duty has long been a goal of Col. Freddy Johnson, the Stoney Point native who is commander of the patrol. “We felt that it was very important to get everyone recognized for the sacrifice that they made,” Johnson said in a news release. “To the families, it’s like it happened yesterday, and to see the heartfelt thanks from them has made this project so worthwhile.” The N.C. Department of Transportation, according to the release, will soon complete the last seven of 23 remaining unnamed bridges for the 70 fallen troopers in NCSHP history.

So long summer, as the autumnal equinox arrives Monday with our first official day of fall. It’s the time of year when we marvel at the colorful hues of yellow, orange and red dotting the landscape. For church homecomings and bazaars with the fried chicken, potato salad, cakes and pies, and renewing old acquaintances. Our days and nights are cooler. You can see it in the trees. You can smell it in the air. Autumn is a glorious time of the year.

Coming Sunday: “Grit, humanity and a sense that prosperity lay on the other side of struggle.” Remembering Robert Redford
