A Fayetteville woman has been charged with stealing nearly $18,000 from the National Association of E.E. Smith Alumni and Friends, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Ivy Monique Wright, 51, is charged with larceny by employee and is accused of embezzling $17,805.36 from the association from Dec. 15, 2021, through July 14, 2022.
Wright turned herself in on Tuesday, accompanied by her attorney, at the Cumberland County Detention Center, according to a news release. She was given a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Her first appearance in court was scheduled for Wednesday, the news release said.
On the association’s website, E.E. Smith Alumni and Friends, Wright identifies herself as the association’s treasurer and a member of its executive board.
She says on the website that she graduated from E.E. Smith High School in 1989.
“My family history is deeply rooted in the halls of E.E. Smith,” Wright says on the website. “My ancestors attended Howard Normal School. My grandparents, my father, niece and nephew, and my son are all proud Golden Bulls. Therefore, my roots fall deep in the foundation of this great establishment that I am a part of.
“The Blue and Ole Gold runs through my veins, like a stream to an ocean,” Wright continues on the website. “I am overly excited about being a part of the executive board as your treasurer.”
