United Way Campaign Kickoff Helps Those in Need

Members of the Fayetteville Technical Community College baseball team were among those who volunteered at the United Way of Cumberland County’s 2021 annual campaign kickoff.

The United Way of Cumberland County’s 2021 annual campaign kickoff was a little different this year. The event usually centers on a luncheon with speakers. Instead, 230 volunteers showed up at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church to put together 25,000 meal packets to go to Fayetteville Urban Ministry.

“We wanted to really show everyone who gives to us how their giving impacts our community,” said Melissa Reid, the director of resource development for United Way of Cumberland County.

Connections of Cumberland County announced that it raised $31,000 through its Art Under the Stars Annual Art Auction held last week at Dirtbag Ales Brewery and Taproom. Connections is a nonprofit that operates a day resource center with case management for homeless women and children.

Methodist University will host a dedication ceremony Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. for its Duggins Soccer Stadium, named in honor of Murray and Nancy Duggins. The event will take place before the women’s game against Christopher Newport at 4:30 p.m. and the men’s game against Ferrum at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Terry Sanford High School will hold a rededication of its new Gilmer L. “Gil” Bowman Tennis Complex in honor of former longtime tennis and girls’ basketball coach Gil Bowman. The event is scheduled, rain or shine, tomorrow at 4 p.m.
