Calling all local authors: Showcase your literary talent, connect with others

Are you an aspiring author looking for an opportunity to showcase your literary talents? Applications are now open for Cumberland County Public Library’s annual Local Authors’ Showcase.

Metronet is handing out free ice cream in neighborhoods across Fayetteville. The internet service provider is sponsoring a branded truck that will be popping up all over town delivering free ice cream to help beat the summer heat, according to a Metronet spokeswoman.

A multicity search for America’s next great veteran or military spouse comedian is coming to Fayetteville. Operation Heal*arious, an "America's Got Talent"-style showcase tour, is scheduled stop at Cape Fear Regional Theatre on July 29, according to a news release.

The Women’s Giving Circle of Cumberland County, a fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, awarded grants for 2023-24 at a June 8 meeting at Cape Fear Botanical Garden. The grants total $56,000, with selected projects focused on financial and educational insecurities; child security; child abuse; foster care; and child care insecurity, according to a news release.

Cape Fear Botanical Garden has received a Youth Growth Stock Trust Grant from United Way of Cumberland County to support intergenerational learning, exploration, creativity and an appreciation for nature, according to a news release. 

Seed Library can help your garden grow

If you’ve ever thought about starting your own home garden, now is the perfect time to give it a try. Cumberland County Public Library is excited to announce the launch of our very own Seed Library.

The PWC Public Works Exhibition is on display through July 22 at the Arts Center, 301 Hay St. in  downtown Fayetteville, according to a news release. Admission is free.

Fayetteville State University’s Olympic-size swimming pool reopened to the campus community in January after a nearly three-year hiatus and almost $750,000 in restorations.

Writers’ group is back at the library

Dear writers: Your passion does not have to be a lonely ordeal. You can hang out with other creative people in one of the longest-running writers groups in the area: the Cumberland County Public Library’s Write On, Right Now (WORN): The Sequel.

Four local veterans at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville were honored for their military service as part of the 75th anniversary of Women Veterans Day. Mary Hernandez, Judith Barnett, Pamela Jordan and Lula Washington were presented with pins and gifts to commemorate the integration of women into the armed forces, a news release said.

Don't stop; keep learning over the summer

School may be out, but your child can keep on top of learning without being in the classroom. Cumberland County Public Library’s website has several digital resources to help you keep your little one’s brain active and entertained all summer without the hassle of homework.

Seniors, the library is the place for you

When you think of the public library, you probably think about story time. Yes, the library is indeed a wonderful place for children, but it’s an excellent gathering place for adults, too.

The American Red Cross is asking for blood donations, citing  a shortfall of  26,000 fewer blood donations than needed in May to meet the needs of patients, according to a news release.

Two of my favorite ways to think of reading are different, yet similar. Reading can be a form of escapism, allowing you to get away from your current reality and create a connection with the characters. Reading also allows indirect experiences that create understanding and compassion for others.

Lighten up

With swimsuit season in full swing, we once again feel the urge to lighten up. Thankfully, the local pickings for healthy fare have recently gained options.

The East Regional Library at 4809 Clinton Road will be closed through June 9 while flooring is installed, according to a news release. The branch of the Cumberland County Public Library System will reopen June 10.

"Wheel of Fortune" is coming to Fayetteville, but Pat and Vanna are not. Fans of the longtime TV game show will get the chance to see “Wheel of Fortune Live” at the Crown Theatre this fall.

Robert C. “Bob” Pinson has been named the new president and CEO of the Arts Council of Fayetteville-Cumberland County. Pinson has been the interim president of the Arts Council for three years. Before that, he was director of operations for nine years, according to a news release.

A new digital archive will feature interviews with students of Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fayetteville State University who visited Selma, Alabama.
