A Fayetteville man charged with attempted murder after he set his girlfriend’s mattress on fire in a home occupied by two adults and five children turned himself in on Monday, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was reported about 1:40 a.m. Thursday in the 1700 block of Kenbrian Street, according to a news release.

Investigators say Patrick Bernard James, 41, set fire to the mattress in a single-wide mobile home during a domestic dispute.

All occupants escaped the fire without injury, the news release said.

James was charged with seven counts of attempted first-degree homicide; one count of first-degree arson; burning of personal property; and assault on a female, the news release said.

James turned himself in at the Cumberland County Detention Center and was held without bond, the news release said. He was scheduled for a first appearance in court on Tuesday morning.
