RALEIGH — CityView magazine was recognized as the best magazine in its category Thursday evening at the N.C. Press Association’s annual awards banquet for publications statewide.
Photographer Cindy Burnham received a first-place award, and three writers were honored for stories in CityView magazine and on the CityView website.
“We congratulate our NCPA award winners and are excited about the great work our reporters and photographers are doing in telling our community’s great stories in CityView and CityView Today,” said publisher Tony Chavonne.
The awards were presented during the annual NCPA convention in Raleigh.
“These awards are a tribute to Lorry Williams,” said magazine editor Bobby Parker. “She led by example in an exemplary career in journalism, becoming a mentor for young journalists and always upholding high professional standards.”
Williams was managing editor of CityView Media’s news website and the magazine until her death in February. She previously had a distinguished career with The Fayetteville Observer, becoming its first woman executive editor.
CityView received the first-place award in the Magazine or Niche Publication category in the online division. Judges reviewed the May 2022, December 2022 and March 2023 issues. May 2022 featured Sylvan Heights Bird Park; December 2022 featured charcuterie boards; and March 2023 featured backyard chickens.
Burnham received the first-place award for feature photography for a magazine story on charcuterie.
The writers who won awards are:
- Jason Canady, third place in feature writing, for a story about Feather Ridge Equestrian Farm.
- Gary Mangum, third place for religion and faith reporting, for a story on Carolina College of Biblical Studies’ 50th
- Michael Futch, third place in general news reporting, for a story about tent cities for the homeless.
