July 16th, 1952 – October 17th, 2026
Hughie James Cashwell, 74, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Hughie was born on July 16, 1952, in Sampson County, North Carolina. He grew up working on farms, learning the value of hard work at an early age. He later went to work for a glass company, where he met the love of his life, Linda S. Cashwell. Together, they built a family and shared 34 years of marriage.
Hughie had a lifelong passion for working on cars. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix when it came to the body of a car or truck. He spent more than 30 years working at Seals Body Shop, a job he truly enjoyed and continued doing until his passing. Working with his hands was more than a job to Hughie; it was something he loved.
Hughie always had a need for speed and a love for dirt track racing. He was happiest when he was elbows deep in a buddy’s dirt track car, lending a hand and doing what he loved. On any given Saturday night, you could usually find him at the dirt track. And when NASCAR season rolled around, he could often be found resting his eyes until the end of the race.
An avid hunter, Hughie never missed an opening day or a Saturday in hunting season. He enjoyed spending time in the woods with his friends and his son, John, hunting bear, deer, and turkey. These traditions and the friendships built along the way were an important part of his life.
Above all else, Hughie loved his family. He was a devoted husband and father who made sure his children always knew he was just a phone call away. No matter what they needed, he would do everything he could to help. He treasured his relationships with his brothers and sisters and valued the family bonds that remained close throughout his life.
Hughie’s friends knew him as a loyal man who did his best to help anyone he could. He didn’t need grand gestures or many words to show he cared. Often, his quiet support, friendly smile, and comforting presence said everything. He was the kind of friend who showed up, stood beside you, and could be counted on when it mattered most.
Hughie leaves behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, friendship, and a deep love for his family. He will be remembered for his skilled hands, his love of racing and hunting, his willingness to help others, and the steady presence he brought to the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 31 years, Linda S. Cashwell; his mother, Doris Cashwell; his father, Horace Cashwell; his sister, Ada Hair; and his brother, Horace Cashwell Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Sweatt, and her husband, Christopher, of Hope Mills; his son, John Cashwell, and his wife, Jordan, of Eastover; his sister, Katherine Naylor, of Eastover; his brother, Quinton Cashwell, of Stedman; and many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
