CityView is a monthly print magazine and an online news organization dedicated to covering Fayetteville and Cumberland County through fair and balanced reporting. Our goal is to serve our readers and our community by reporting intensely on government affairs, digging deep into investigative stories and exploring questions and ideas that frame discussions in Cumberland County.

About Us

CityView is a member of The Assembly Network.

The Assembly is North Carolina’s independent, digital-first media company focused on the stories that shape our communities, state, and shared future. Since its founding as a statewide news outlet, The Assembly Network has grown to encompass local teams across the state, including The ThreadThe DiveINDY, CityView, and Border Belt Independent. Statewide and local teams work together to provide an essential, trusted news source for our state.

Members of The Assembly‘s local reporting network have their own editorial teams and produce original journalism in their community. All members of the network are reader supported. If your newsroom is interested in joining the network, please reach out to info@theassemblync.com.

Freelance Writing and Photography

CityView Media, Fayetteville and Cumberland County’s premier lifestyle magazine and local news provider, works with freelance writers, columnists and photographers throughout the year.

We’re always looking for freelance contributors who are inherently curious and eager to tell community-centered stories. If you have an idea for a deep-dive investigation, an arts and culture feature, or a shorter news story, let us know. We publish a wide range of articles, always with the intention of being informative and illustrative. Hours and location are flexible.

Editorial Independence Policy

Our organization retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.

Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.

Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year.

Conflict of Interest Policy

Our journalists should avoid conflicts of interest, or the appearance of conflicts, that could harm the credibility of their reporting. They should avoid covering or reporting about an organization or individual in which they have an interest, either as a member, investor, former employee, or donor. Any concerns about a conflict or potential should be discussed with your editor. If covering a topic for which a reporter holds a conflict of interest is unavoidable, it must be disclosed in the story as a parenthetical or an endnote.

Examples of a conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest:

  • A reporter cannot serve in political office. A conflict of interest may also extend to the partner or immediate family (parent, sibling, child, in-laws) serving in or running for political office within a reporter’s coverage area, or working for an entity that the reporter covers.
  • Reporters who gain access to confidential material in the course of their reporting should not exploit that for personal gain, or share it with others who might.
  • Accepting payment, gifts, and other quid-pro-quo items, outside of approved journalistic or grant funding. The reporter should speak with an editor for any clarification.
  • A financial or romantic relationship with a person we cover that could potentially undermine the credibility of our reporting.
  • Speaking engagements or other external opportunities that could raise questions about a reporter’s impartiality, either for pay or voluntary.
  • Volunteer or paid civic, non-profit, religious, or community service work that overlaps with or touches upon your beat or regional coverage.
  • A reporter shouldn’t receive anything—including meals, gifts, and in-kind services—of value over $50.

Comments Approval Policy

Social media comments are moderated and approved by CityView’s editorial team. We welcome feedback and insightful discourse on our reporting and on community issues, but comments should be civil and respectful. CityView’s decisions on comment moderation are subjective, made intentionally and with consideration. In order to be posted, comments need to have the full name of the writer and a valid email address. Thank you for adhering to the guidelines of our community!

  1. Expect your comment not to be approved if it’s mean-spirited, rude, expresses discriminatory language, or contains profanity. This extends to comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, or contain other forms of hate speech.
  2. Don’t ramble. Be brief and concise. Limit word counts to 350 words or fewer.
  3. Don’t make personal attacks. This extends to the reporter and subjects of the story.
  4. Stay on topic. Comments should not serve as a distraction to the story they are left on.
  5. If your comment contains a story tip that we think has sensitive information in it, be aware we may choose to not make it public.
  6. We fact-check comments when we can; comments that contain misinformation or information that cannot be verified won’t be approved.
