Terry Sanford golfer’s drive credited for opportunity to play on college level
In local high school golf circles, Terry Sanford’s Ethan Paschal joined some elite company when he signed this week to play at the college level for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The number of players from this area who have been remotely affiliated with college golf at the Division I level is extremely small, to say the least. And Paschal now finds himself on a short list of storied names that include Fayetteville High/Terry Sanford legends such as Raymond Floyd and Chip Beck.

Terry Sanford women’s tennis going to win state title against Lake Norman
Terry Sanford’s women’s tennis team has a state doubles championship to its credit. Now the Bulldogs will attempt to add a team title to its haul of honors. Last weekend, the duo of Pauline Bui and Loren Galaviz took home the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A doubles crown with a 6-1, 6-0 win over twins Caroline and Kathryn Adkins of Fike High School in Wilson. Their teammates will join them in Burlington on Saturday for the 3-A dual team final against Lake Norman Charter School at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Pine Forest players come together as a team to turn season around
Just three weeks into the 2023 football season, things looked extremely bleak for Bill Sochovka’s Pine Forest Trojans. After games with eventual state playoff qualifiers Cape Fear, Seventy-First and Gray’s Creek, the Trojans were 0-3 and had an average losing margin of 32 points per game. The Trojans went 6-1 the rest of the season and wound up capturing their third consecutive conference title.

Douglas Byrd’s 1972 football squad celebrates 50th anniversary of premiere season
They were pulled together from two dramatically different schools, a relatively small neighborhood group that was closing its doors and a mega-school with a rich athletic history that was having a hunk of its student-athletes moved into an unknown situation. That was the circumstance that led to the birth of Douglas Byrd High School back in 1972 when the boys from Massey Hill and Seventy-First united to make history.
