Fayetteville loses a special journalist

About three weeks ago, Lorry Williams told a colleague that she was stepping down as managing editor of CityView news and CityView magazine. By then, the breast cancer she had fought for two years had spread throughout her body, leaving her so weak that she could barely type using only two fingers. “You know how much this job means to me,” she told the colleague as she struggled to hold back tears. Ms. Williams transitioned to hospice care at her mother’s home. She died early Tuesday at the age of 59.

The man who murdered the owner of the Uncle Ben’s store is now free

Anthony Willis is a free man now, almost 27 years after murdering Benjamin Miller, the owner of the former Uncle Ben’s Country Store on the outskirts of Fayetteville.  Willis has been free since March 24, two weeks after Gov. Roy Cooper granted him and two others executive clemency. All three were juveniles when they received sentences of at least 20 years in prison. Willis was sentenced to life in prison without benefit of parole.

Fayetteville woman alleges police abused, handcuffed her without cause

A Fayetteville woman was doing nothing improper when a police officer grabbed her arm and tried to pull her out of her car before putting her in handcuffs, her lawyers allege. The lawyers, Carnell Johnson of Charlotte and Harry Daniels of Atlanta, say they intend to file a civil lawsuit against Fayetteville police alleging that Ja’Lana Dunlap was detained without probable cause and that police used unnecessary force during the Sept. 6 incident.
