The Cumberland County Democratic Party recently held its first in-person convention since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Derrick Montgomery, the pastor of United Ministries in Christ Church, was elected chairman, according to a news release from the party.

The convention was held April 15 at Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Speakers state Sen. Dan Blue, minority leader of the North Carolina Senate; state Rep. Robert Rieves, the House Democratic leader; and Kimberly Hardy, second vice chair of the state Democratic  Party, the release said.

All organized precincts elected new Cumberland County Democratic Party officers who will serve 2023-2025.

The newly elected officers will serve through 2025. Besides Montgomery, they are:

  • Erika Burns, first vice chair.
  • Caroline Gregory, second vice chair.
  • Jamaal Doran, third vice chair.
  • Crystal Edmonds, secretary.

Additionally, Montgomery appointed Pat Randall as treasurer.

Also selected were 14 county representatives to the State Executive Committee.

The new officers held their first planning meeting on Monday, the release said. Among the goals they set are setting aggressive fundraising strategies; strengthening relationships with potential and current Democratic candidates; equipping precinct chairs with tools and resources; and opening a local office.

A reception for the new leadership team will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 18 at the Rand & Gregory law office at 343 Person St.
