The Cumberland County Board of Education moved its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday to South View High School and is considering extending the public comment session—all in an effort to accommodate growing public interest as the board considers closing and consolidating schools.
The meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium, was moved to be able to host a larger audience. Board members will also vote early in the meeting whether to extend the public comment period from the customary 30 minutes to one hour.
Each speaker will still be limited to three minutes, in accordance with district policy. The extended comment period will allow more individuals the chance to speak during the meeting.
District officials said the adjustments were made in anticipation of increased community attendance and to provide additional seating capacity, improved parking access, and an environment that supports orderly participation.
The change comes as public attention around recent school board decisions has intensified, particularly as the district weighs school consolidations and other facility changes.
In recent weeks, community meetings and town halls have drawn residents from across the county. Parents pushed back after the board voted on February 9 to end the year-round calendar at E.E. Miller Elementary, and Spring Lake residents gathered at Spring Lake Town Hall to rally against the potential closure of Manchester Elementary. In January, supporters of Massey Hill Classical High School urged the board to keep that campus open.
Some parents and community members have also organized petitions and spoken out about the potential impact of the district’s plans on their neighborhoods.
On Tuesday, the school board will consider rescinding three votes from the February 9 meeting—ending year-round school at E.E. Miller, demolishing the former Pauline Jones Elementary School, and consolidating Ramsey Street High School and Alger B. Wilkins High School into other campuses. On March 3, the board’s Auxiliary Services Committee supported rescinding those three votes.
By moving the meeting to South View High School, district leaders said they hope to better accommodate a larger crowd.
Residents who wish to speak during public comment must sign up in advance. The district provides a registration form on its website, which opens from noon until 5:30 p.m. the day of the meeting.
