A caretaker of a year-old child has been charged with his murder, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

The baby was reported as unresponsive about 8 a.m. on Jan. 6, according to a news release.

Officers were sent to the home in the 6000 block of Beargrass Street. The child was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

An autopsy determined that the cause was homicide.

At the time of the incident, the baby was in the custody of a family member, Deborah Vanburen, the news release said.

Vanburen, 31, of Fayetteville, was charged with first-degree murder. She was taken into custody on Wednesday and was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond, the release said.
