A former substitute teacher with Cumberland County Schools was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a student and eight counts of felonious restraint.

Laโ€™Kisha Davis was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center, where she is being held on a $75,000 bond, according to the Cumberland County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Davis, 46, began subbing with the school district in September 2014. On March 6, she was dismissed from her position, according to a statement from the school system. Davis most recently worked as a substitute teacher at New Century International Middle School, where she also was a non-faculty volunteer coach of a pep squad.

โ€œWe take this matter very seriously, as our top priority is always the safety and well-being of our students and staff. As a part of regular procedures, Cumberland County Schools conducts extensive background checks on all employees,โ€ the statement from CCS read. โ€œWhen the allegations were brought to our attention, we immediately reported them to law enforcement. This individual is no longer employed by the school system as a substitute teacher or volunteer coach. District officials will continue to cooperate with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office as it leads this investigation.โ€

The school district declined to give any specific disciplinary action related to the charges, citing personnel confidentiality laws.
