Cumberland County residents who want to suggest ways to make life better or learn more about government programs to help bring affordable housing to the community are invited to participate in a series of public hearings next week.
The hearings will be conducted online.
The Cumberland County Community Development office is preparing a Five-Year Consolidated Plan for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Chief of Staff Tye Vaught of the Cumberland County government said HUD provides money for programs to eliminate slums and blight and develop and provide affordable housing for people with low incomes.
“In our current plan, our focus has been on five priority areas, to include housing, the unhoused, community development, economic development and special needs,” Vaught said Monday at the monthly meeting of the Joint City and County Liaison Committee.
The public’s feedback is to inform the five-year plan and also a one-year Annual Action Plan that will support the five-year plan, says an announcement from the Cumberland County government.
The five-year plan “describes the needs and available resources in the community,” the news release says. It also “establishes strategies and goals that Community Development will undertake to meet the needs of the community during the next five years.”
The one-year Annual Action Plan describes projects scheduled for the upcoming fiscal year, beginning July 1.
Residents can sign up for any of the eight public hearing sessions to learn more and make suggestions:
- Tuesday, March 25: 8 to 9 a.m.; 10 to 11 a.m; 1 to 2 p.m.; and 3 to 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, March 26: 8 to 9 a.m.; 10 to 11 a.m.; 1 to 2 p.m.; 3 to 4 p.m.
