An infant is dead after its mother was shot in the stomach, forcing an emergency Caesarean section, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

The woman, who was in the late term of her pregnancy, was shot in the stomach in the 1800 block of Powell Street. She was in critical condition at the hospital, a news release said.

A second woman also was shot and was reported in stable condition.
