Sharon Moyer understands what it’s like to juggle work, family, and everything else life throws at us. As Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships for The News Foundation of Greater Fayetteville, she’s using her 35 years of community leadership and deep Fayetteville roots to tackle a challenge we all face: staying informed about what’s happening in our own backyard.

“While we’re busy with our daily lives, elected officials and other power players are making decisions that affect our neighborhoods, our kids’ schools, and our tax dollars,” says Moyer, whose career has spanned leadership roles at The Fayetteville Observer, Partnership for Children of Cumberland County, and The Fayetteville Dogwood Festival. “Local journalism helps us stay connected to our community and have a voice in the decisions that matter to our daily lives.”

Moyerโ€™s extensive local involvement has earned her recognition with the Elmer Floyd Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service (2020) and the ATHENA Leadership Award (2019).

Now, as Giving Tuesday approaches, Moyer and The News Foundation are reaching out to neighbors throughout Fayetteville to support CityView‘s vital work as part of the Cumberland Community Foundation’s annual Giving Tuesday initiative. Giving Tuesday is a collaborative effort that brings together nonprofits across Cumberland County to strengthen our community through local generosity.

“Sharon knows this community inside and out, and more importantly, she understands the importance of a strong free press in Fayetteville and Cumberland County,” says Tony Chavonne, board chair of The News Foundation of Greater Fayetteville.

Staying connected to what matters

This Giving Tuesday, Moyer and The News Foundation Board are asking Fayetteville residents to support local journalism that helps us all stay informed about our community. As part of the Cumberland Community Foundation’s broader Giving Tuesday initiative to strengthen our county through local giving, CityView represents a crucial piece of community infrastructure: the journalists who show up to the city council meetings, report on how our tax money gets spent, and cover the issues our neighbors are talking about.

“Whether it’s understanding new traffic patterns, school board decisions, or changes at Fort Bragg that affect our families, local journalism helps us know what’s happening in our community,” Moyer explains. “This isn’t just about news, it’s about helping all of us stay connected to the place we call home.”
