New DNA test results in a series of rapes and kidnappings 15 years ago has resulted in the arrest of a Fayetteville man, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Christopher James McMillan, 38, was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree kidnapping, one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of communicating threats, a police news release said.

The charges were filed on Nov. 7 by the Police Department’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit, the release said. McMillian was located Wednesday by the department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team.

McMillan was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $200,000 secured bond, the release said.

The charges against McMillan stem from a series of rapes and kidnappings in 2007, the news release said. An initial investigation determined that in August 2007, McMillan would offer rides to his victims and take them to a secluded location, then sexually assault them, the release said.

The case remained unsolved because of limitations in DNA technology. However, the sexual assault kits from the cases were recently submitted for testing using a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and McMillan was identified as a suspect. The bureau is part of the U.S. Department of Justice.
