Good morning. Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin will not run for reelection this fall.
Colvin, who was first elected in 2017, previously said he had not ruled out running again. But in a statement Thursday, he said he wanted to spend more time with family and on his businesses.
He said serving as mayor was “honor of my life” and thanked his family, friends and the Fayetteville community for supporting his leadership. Read more in today’s lead story.
Welcome to CityView Today. It’s a busy day in news. In today’s newsletter: A public historian, Khadija McNair, is set to deliver an annual Juneteenth lecture on Monday at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville. We also preview a couple of other events in honor of Juneteenth. Then, 2,000 Fort Bragg soldiers will participate in the Army’s 250th birthday parade tomorrow in Washington, D.C. — the base is sending them, according to the Public Affairs Office for the 18th Airborne Corps. And while the country’s capital will be celebrating the anniversary, local organizers will be participating in a “No Kings” protest against President Donald Trump and his administration in Fayetteville, starting at the Cumberland County Courthouse and marching to Cross Creek Linear Park. Plus, one Fayetteville councilman who voted in opposition to the recently passed 2026 budget speaks on his dissent, while the city manager lauds it in Bill Kirby Jr.’s Friday column. Read more below.
