Sheila Pickard Kilbourne, 74, died on July 13, 2026, at her residence in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Born on March 20, 1952, in Franklin, New Hampshire, to Clara Glines Waldo and Harlan V. Pickard, Jr., Sheila moved to Fayetteville in the late 1960s with her first husband, John Carberry, where she made her home for the remainder of her life.
Sheila was the mother of twin sons, Joseph and John Carberry, and daughter Michelle Carberry. In the 1980s, she and John opened their home as foster parents to several children. She also loved animals and shared her life with many canine companions over the years.
After earning several accounting certificates from Fayetteville Technical College, Sheila spent much of her career working in accounting. In the 1980s, she helped operate the family business, JW Carberry Electric, and also worked for the Fayetteville Generals. She later worked for many years in the accounting department at MJ Soffe before retiring from the Cumberland County Department of Social Services.
In 1994, Sheila married SSGT (Ret.) John K. Kilbourne, and they remained married until his passing. Through the years, she was active in the VFW and supported veterans and causes that were meaningful to her.
She faithfully cared for her son, John, throughout his life.
She enjoyed working in her yard, bird watching and was fiercely patriotic. Also- according to her son, Joseph, she made the absolute best no bake cookies, apple crisp and fudge in the world.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her brother, Walter Jordan. She will be missed by her surviving children, Joseph Carberry (Kristy) of Leesburg, Georgia, John Carberry and Michelle Carberry of Fayetteville, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Dylan and Karoline Carberry; and her siblings, Jean Brusseau, Dick Waldo, David Waldo, Robert Waldo, and Roger Waldo, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Per her wishes, Sheila will be cremated. A memorial service may be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in her memory.
