A former teacher at Douglas Byrd Middle School has been charged with a sex offense involving a student, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Brittan Phillips was arrested Monday on charges of felony sex offense with a student and felony crimes against nature, according to a news release.

Phillips was given a $25,000 secured bond. Her first appearance in court was set for Tuesday afternoon, the release said.

Phillips was a Douglas Byrd Middle School teacher when the assault occurred, according to the release.
