A Cumberland County elementary school student was placed on the wrong bus on Monday, the first day of class for schools on a traditional calendar.

A spokesman for the school system said Tuesday he did not have details about the incident, including the child’s’ age and gender.

Without the studentโ€™s name, spokesman Lindsay Whitley said, privacy laws prevent releasing information.

โ€œThankfully, the student was safe, and thatโ€™s our priority,โ€ Whitley said. โ€œWeโ€™re grateful that the student is safe.โ€

A statement from Cumberland County Schools reiterated that its top priority is the safety of students.

โ€œWhile we regret this situation happened, we are grateful that the student is safe,โ€ the news release said. โ€œDistrict and school officials are looking into this situation to determine exactly what happened and how we can prevent it from happening in the future.โ€

Whitley said the first day of the new school year otherwise proved to be โ€œa great day, a great first day.โ€

โ€œI think we were very pleased with the smooth operations at our schools,โ€ he said.
