Fort Liberty soldier gets a West Point surprise
FORT LIBERTY — Oziel Carrillo never planned to go to college. But after seeing some of his Army buddies gain entry into the Preparatory Academy at West Point, he changed his thinking. And at an admissions information session Thursday, admissions officers from the U.S. Military Academy visiting Fort Liberty surprised Carrillo with a letter of assurance that will all but guarantee him entrance to West Point.

City and state officials gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the completion of construction and upcoming opening of the Day Resource Center for the homeless. he facility includes a wide array of features and services, including showers and laundry facilities; a kitchen for lunch service; office space for social workers and case managers; a family and children’s room; medical offices for preventative care and health services; a quiet room for meditation and rest; and space for people to gather to escape extreme heat or cold.

Parents warned of lead found at Beaver Dam Elementary School
Parents of children who attend Beaver Dam Elementary School have been warned about high levels of lead in the water there. Chipped paint at the school prompted the Cumberland County Department of Public Health to test for lead in the water of the school in the southeastern part of the county.
