Elizabeth Hayes Smith, 83, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Born on December 2, 1941, in Dillon County, South Carolina, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Chester C. Hayes and Albertine Marlowe Hayes. She retired from Carolina Telephone Co., where she worked as an operator for many years.
Elizabeth found joy in working in her yard, shopping, and spending time with her beloved grandson and his family. She especially cherished outings with her daughter, Michelle, sharing meals and browsing shops together before Michelle’s passing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley H. Smith; daughter, Michelle S. Black; sister, Edith H. Britt; and brothers, Raymond E. Hayes, D.C. Hayes, and Earl Hayes.
Elizabeth is survived by her grandson, John David Horne III and his wife, Jacqueline Dezarn; and great-grandchildren, Dallas Jackson Horne and Oakley Tucker Horne.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 18, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Lafayette Memorial Park.
