The annual Grinding of the Greens Christmas tree recycling program begins Jan. 9, according to Fayetteville Public Works Commission.

Since 1994, the program has encouraged Fayetteville residents to recycle live Christmas trees and has kept thousands of pounds of recyclable material out of landfills, according to the PWC website.ย Grinding of the Greens is a partnership among PWC, Cumberland-Fayetteville Parks & Recreation, and Duke Energy Progress.

Trees are turned into mulch for the Fayetteville Community Garden and other local parks, PWC says.

Parks & Recreation crews will collect the trees beginning Jan. 9.ย The pickups are separate from yard waste, trash or recycling collection. Trees should put out for curbside collection by the morning of Jan. 9. ย Lights, stands and decorations should be removed from the tree, PWC says.

Residents who live outside the city or who miss the pickup may drop off trees at the Fayetteville Community Garden, located at Van Story and Mann streets off Old Wilmington Road,ย any day before Jan. 21.

PWC and Duke Energy volunteers will grind them into mulch on Jan. 21, PWC says.
