A protest billed as “Sleep Out” is planned to draw attention to the needs of the homeless at the city’s Day Resource Center, which was set to open Monday.

The protest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the center, 128 S. King St., according to a news release.

Joseph Wheeler, a homeless man and an advocate for the unhoused, is organizing the demonstration.

Wheeler said in the news release that Sleep Out is intended to be a peaceful protest to raise awareness about deficiencies of the Day Resource Center and homeless people who are not getting the resources they need.

Cumberland HealthNet, the organization that oversees the Day Resource Center for the city of Fayetteville, has come under scrutiny for what Wheeler and other critics say is a lackluster performance.

The Day Resource Center provides showers and laundry facilities; a kitchen for lunch service; office space for social workers and case managers; and other services.

At its opening, Shelly Hudson, executive director of Cumberland HealthNet, said the center “is going to be a one-stop shop for those that are experiencing homelessness so they can come to one place instead of having to go all over the city to get resources.”
