The brother of a man who was found stabbed to death outside the Veterans Affairs Medical Center on June 15 has been charged with his murder, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.
Police officers found the body of Gerald Unique Viera, 32, outside the gates of the hospital on Ramsey Street about 4:50 a.m. June 15, according to a news release from the Police Department.
Investigators said Viera was involved in a family altercation in the 2300 block of Lake Avenue. A friend was taking Viera to the VA Medical Center because it was the closest hospital, the news release said.
When Viera’s condition worsened, the friend stopped outside the VA hospital to wait for emergency workers to respond. Viera died from his injuries before he could be treated, the release said.
Derelle Allen Viera, 32, of Fayetteville, is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the case. He was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $150,000 secured bond.
