A man was shot and found lying on Gillespie Street in front of a motel early Monday morning, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting was reported about 2:20 a.m. Monday outside Carolina Motor Inn at 2533 Gillespie St., according to a news release.

Deputies found the man in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Berry Deshawn Ray, 40, of St. Pauls, was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm into occupied property; assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury; and possession of a firearm by a felon, the release said.

Ray was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center and held on a $100,000 secured bond. His first appearance in court is set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the jail.
