Alice Calhoun Wilder, 83, of Fayetteville passed away on February 13, 2024. Alice was born on August 17, 1940.

Alice is preceded in death by both parents, Dougald James Calhoun, and Lalah Rooks Calhoun; sister, Betty Calhoun Stone; brother-in-law, Robert H. Stone; beloved husband of 59 years, Richard M. Wilder Jr. Alice is survived by her son, Richard M. Wilder III., and grandson, Benjamin M. Wilder, sister-in-law, Shelby Allen of Maxton, NC and Carolyn Wilder of Fayetteville, NC, longtime best friend and coworker, Polly Myers of Fayetteville, and six nieces and two nephews.

Alice was the longest serving educator in Cumberland County Schools. She began her teaching career at William H. Owen in 1962, securing the position even before graduating from East Carolina University. Except for 2 years at two other schools, all of her 41-year career was spent at Owen. She retired in 2003. In 1985, Alice received her master’s in education from Fayetteville State University. This inspired her older sister Betty, also an educator, to follow suit in 1991.

Alice and her husband Richard enjoyed spending time at Holden Beach, where they owned a home. It also meant spending precious time with their son and their grandson.

Alice was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church until her health prevented her from attending in recent years.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 22, at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 10:45 to 11:45 am. A funeral service will be held at 12 pm with Reverend Matthew Copple officiating. Burial to follow the service at Lafayette Memorial Park.
