Jayda Angel, Cape Fear, basketball
In the Brenda Jernigan Bracket of this year’s Holiday Classic women’s basketball tournament, Jayda Angel led Cape Fear to a 61-51 win over Richmond Senior in the championship game. Angel was named MVP of the tournament, scoring 33 points and hitting 13 of 25 shots from the field. According to the most recent MaxPreps statewide statistics, Angel is the state’s leading scorer in high school basketball with 34.1 points per game.
Malachi Cooke, Pine Forest, basketball
With 11 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game, Malachi Cooke led Pine Forest to victory in the Chuck Mohn Bracket of the men’s Holiday Classic. They defeated Jack Britt 38-37 in the finals.
