A standout receiver for Cape Fear football and a star of Terry Sanford’s win over Carrboro in girls tennis are the Athletes of the Week for Cumberland County high schools.
Jeremiah Melvin, Cape Fear, football
In Cape Fear’s 48-14 win over Gray’s Creek, Melvin had four catches for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has 16 receiving touchdowns for the season, a Cape Fear single-season record.
Lauren Ruppe, Terry Sanford, tennis
Ruppe, who plays No. 6 singles for the Bulldogs, is 27-0 in dual team matches this season. She played a key role in Terry Sanford’s third-round win over powerful Carrboro and scored a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win in Terry Sanford’s playoff match with Greenville Rose.
