Car crash on Christmas morning kills married couple

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit investigated a vehicle crash that occurred Monday in the area of Hope Mills Road and Glensford Drive that resulted in two deaths and the arrest of a 26-year-old man.

At about 10:55 a.m., officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to the area of Hope Mills Road and Glensford Drive to reports of a vehicle crash between two vehicles. Upon arriving on scene, officers located a Toyota Corolla and a Chrysler 300.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota were both pronounced dead at the scene. Killed were Jada Fields, 47, and Patricia Fields, 46, who police say were married. Their family has been notified. 

The preliminary investigation revealed the Toyota was traveling west and had a green light on Raeford Road. The Chrysler was traveling north on Hope Mills Road and ran a red light, colliding with the Toyota.  

Police charged Michael Anthony Smith Jr. with the following :

  • 2 counts misdemeanor death by motor vehicle
  • Reckless driving
  • Stop light violation
  • Failure to reduce speed
  • Driving while license revoked
  • Failure to register vehicle
  • No insurance
  • Failure to display correct license plate
  • Expired inspection
  • Failure to wear seatbelt
  • Windshield tint violation
