Cumberland Community Foundation on Tuesday announced $557,150 in scholarship awards to students at a reception at Cape Fear Botanical Garden.
Students applied in two award cycles, according to a news release:
Robert H. Short Scholars Program: Scholarships are available to high school seniors who graduate in Cumberland County and will attend an accredited public university or nonprofit private college or university. Students may apply in the fall of their senior year. Awards of as much as $30,000 are made possible by a $10 million gift in the will of the late Robert H. “Bob” Short, a local businessman and philanthropist who valued education, the news release said. Sixteen members of the Class of 2023 will receive a total of $480,000.
Community Scholarship Program: Applications are available online in February and due in late March each year. This year, the foundation announced 60 awards totaling $77,150. Awards range from $500 to $10,000 and are made possible by civic groups, such as the Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; and Cape Fear Kiwanis, the news release said. Individuals and families establish endowed scholarships as a legacy for a loved one, such as the Dr. Gloria Dantzler and Sgt. 1st Class (Ret.) Leon Dantzler Sr. Memorial Scholarship; Brian Edkins Memorial Scholarship; Curtis E. Torrey Scholarship; and Ella Smith Downing Charitable Scholarship.
One scholarship this year marks a milestone. As a surprise for her 90th birthday, Janie Chavis-Lucas was honored by her family and friends with scholarship endowment named for her. Chavis-Lucas was the founder of Teen Involvement Projects, one of the first youth-serving organizations in Cumberland County, the release said. The 2023 recipient is Janae Johnson.
Established in 1980, Cumberland Community Foundation is a nonprofit charitable foundation that helps donors create endowments to support their favorite causes, the release said. The foundation manages more than 610 individual charitable funds totaling more than $120 million.
The foundation awards grants annually according to the charitable purpose designated by the donors. Donors may create an endowment with gifts of $25,000 or more.
