Council to review sustainability plan, resident survey results

The Fayetteville City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Here’s what’s on the agenda:  

• Public forum: Thursday’s meeting includes a public comment period. Individuals interested in speaking must sign up beforehand. The public forum is limited to 30 minutes and each speaker is allocated three minutes.
• Sustainability plan: The council will kick off Fayetteville’s new sustainability project by receiving a briefing on the city’s initiative to develop a comprehensive sustainability plan covering energy, transportation, waste management and community engagement. The plan’s objective is “to develop a comprehensive sustainability framework to enhance the quality of life, promote economic vitality, and ensure environmental stewardship,” according to the meeting agenda summary.  

• Resident survey overview: The council will hear a report on the results of the survey Fayetteville recently asked residents to complete. The report will address major findings and trends. 

• Board and commission appointments: The council will receive recommendations for appointments to the city’s various boards and commissions for terms starting April 1. The council can vote to approve the appointments based on the recommendations or take some other action. 

As part of the meeting’s consent agenda — typically approved with a single vote, though the individual items on the agenda may be adjusted — the council will decide whether to provide legal representation to one current and one former Fayetteville police officer named in a lawsuit by a woman who alleges she was injured and falsely detained during a 2020 incident. According to the agenda memo, the vote would also include providing legal representation to Mayor Mitch Colvin and former Police Chief Gina Hawkins, who are also defendants in the case. 

The council meeting will take place at City Hall, 433 Hay Street. It will also be aired on Spectrum Cable Channel 7 and live-streamed at www.faytv.net.
