County lights courthouse green in support of Veterans during 'Operation Green Light'

Posted

Cumberland County is lighting the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Courthouse in green light this week as part of Operation Green Light to show support for military veterans and shine a light on the resources available to assist veterans and their families.

Operation Green Light is an annual national initiative in which Cumberland County is participating in partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veteran Services Officers. In addition to showing support for veterans, Operation Green Light aims to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners also adopted a proclamation in support of Operation Green Light during their regular meeting on Monday. As the proclamation notes, Cumberland County is home to the largest military installation in the world in Fort Liberty and has the third-largest veteran population in the State at approximately 52,370 in FY 2022.

Commissioners encouraged others to join in the County’s display of support for veterans and their families. Residents are encouraged to join the County in participating in Operation Green Light by simply changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. Businesses, nonprofits and others are also invited to participate. Shining a green light is meant to let our veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported.

While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (Nov. 6 -12), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Participants are also encouraged to share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
