As officials gear up for the 2024 primary elections in March, Cumberland County residents will be able to get the identification they need to vote at a series of clinics in January and February.
According to a news release from Cumberland County, the county’s Board of Elections is sponsoring the clinics, which begin Jan. 10 and end Feb. 3.
Angie Amaro, the county’s elections director, told CityView that the clinics are designed to help the county’s elderly residents.
“Going into a presidential election, we wanted to try to target the areas where there’s a large amount of senior citizens,” she said. “We just wanted to try to start there and the heavily-populated recreation centers.”
Amaro said additional clinics will be held after the March primaries in Hope Mills, Eastover and other areas that aren’t covered by the January and February dates.
North Carolina began requiring photo identification to vote this year. The county’s voter ID clinics will offer free identification cards that can be used solely to vote, Amaro said.
Those interested in obtaining a voter ID card will only need to provide their name, date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number, according to Amaro. Applicants also must be registered to vote to get an ID card, she said, noting that the clinic will also offer that service.
And though the winter clinics are aimed at senior citizens, Amaro said that anyone in need of an ID card is encouraged to attend.
“It’s open to anyone in the county,” she said.
