Detention officer accused of providing cell phone to inmate

A detention officer is accused of providing a cell phone to an inmate at the Cumberland 

County Detention Center, the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Monique Rossetta Smith, 29, of Fayetteville, was arrested Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a release. She was hired in January as a detention officer, the release said.

The Sheriff's Office began its investigation into Smith after a policy violation was reported earlier this month, the release said. During the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said it found evidence that Smith provided a cell phone to at least one inmate. Smith was terminated on Oct. 14, the release said.

Smith received a $2,500 unsecured bond. Her first appearance is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
