Drill team chapter commander hopes to ‘finish your story’

Posted

Each year, Cumberland County Schools names a graduating senior at each high school as a Standout Senior. The 17 2023 Standout Seniors are bright, hard-working students who have overcome the odds to graduate and dedicate themselves to serving their community.

To learn more about their plans to attend college, serve in the military or begin their careers, go to www.ccs.k12.nc.us/graduation.

Jayvion Summerville will graduate from South View High School. He answered these questions about his education and his future.

  • What accomplishment are you most proud of or what do you want to be remembered for?

The accomplishment I am most proud of is being the battalion commander in JROTC at South View.

  • What are your plans after graduation?

I am going to Virginia Military Institute for four years on an ROTC scholarship and will become an officer in the Army.

  • How many volunteer hours have you accrued?

I have accrued more than 300 volunteer hours.

  • Have you received any scholarships? If so, please list them.

Yes, I received $47,000 for one year and $57,000 for the other three years.

  • Please list your extracurricular activities and tell us about your favorite.

Drill Team is my main extracurricular activity, and I have won 11 trophies.

  • Do you have a self-statement or a favorite quote that best describes you and your aspirations for the future?

“Finish your chapter, then continue that story until you finish your story.”

  • How do you feel the Cumberland County Schools has prepared you for your future?
  • Cumberland County Schools has prepared me mainly through my participation in JROTC because I would not be ready for the real world without it.

Is there someone on staff in the school system (a teacher, administrator, coach, etc.) who has made a lasting impression on you? What lesson did they teach you that you will always remember?

  • My JROTC instructor, Sgt. Major Ruby Murray, has made a lasting impression on me because she has taught me that my voice has power.
  • What elementary school did you attend?
  • I attended C. Wayne Collier Elementary School in Hope Mills and River Road Elementary in Columbus, Georgia.
