ALTERCATION ON MURCHISON ROAD

Police ID driver killed by officer after Thursday traffic stop

Posted

Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden on Friday identified the motorist killed by a police officer during a Thursday traffic stop.

In a press conference, Braden said 49-year-old DeMarcus Brodie of Fayetteville was shot and killed by Officer Dillon Hoke during a traffic stop that led to a physical altercation between the two.

Hoke, who’s worked for the department since 2016, stopped the vehicle driven by Brodie along the 2000 block of Murchison Road on Thursday. Braden said that during the stop, a physical altercation occurred after Brodie began assaulting officers while resisting being detained. Despite de-escalation attempts by Hoke and other officers, Brodie continued his assault. It was at that point Hoke fired his weapon, Braden said.

Brodie was the only occupant of the vehicle, Braden said. A knife was found at the scene.

Hoke, who was injured during the stop, was treated for injuries at a local hospital. He’s currently on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation has assumed the investigation.
