Elizabeth (Betty) Erwin West
1939-2024
Spring Lake, North Carolina - Elizabeth (Betty) Erwin West, 84, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, in her home surrounded by her family.
Betty was born on May 14, 1939, in Albemarle, NC to the late Reverend Samuel Joseph Erwin and Jessie King Martin Erwin. She grew up in Lexington, NC and graduated from Lexington High School, and continued her studies at Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, her husband, Jerry Robert West, Sr., of Anderson Creek, NC.
She and Jerry were married on July 25, 1959, and spent the early years of their marriage in Carteret County, NC, where Jerry was employed as a teacher and coach with Betty being a very supportive partner. Jerry and Betty later moved to Fayetteville, NC where Jerry continued his education career. Betty and Jerry had two children, Jerry Robert West, Jr., and Mary Elizabeth West Lemonds.
Betty worked as a Church Secretary with Lafayette Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC for 12 years. She was also employed with Cumberland County Schools for 22 years. Most of her time with Cumberland Schools she was employed as the Guidance Secretary for Douglas Byrd High School. She enjoyed her time with Douglas Byrd High School, especially helping students as they were planning their future life goals.
Betty and Jerry were active members of Lafayette Baptist Church, Village Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC, and New Hope Baptist Church in Spring Lake, NC. Betty and Jerry served in many capacities in their respective churches, but Betty especially enjoyed being a part of the church choir.
After retirement, Jerry and Betty enjoyed spending time at their retirement home in Beech Mountain, NC. They spent lots of time entertaining friends and family in their Beech Mountain home and seeing the sights of the North Carolina Mountains.
Betty and Jerry cherished their grandchildren; Matthew Lemonds, Mallory Lemonds, and Violet, and Nathan West. They enjoyed being involved in their lives and supporting them in any and every way.
Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Jerry Robert West, Sr. She is survived by her son; Jerry Robert West, Jr. of Spring Lake, NC, and daughter, Mary West Lemonds and husband Eddie also of Spring Lake, NC, brother; Martin Erwin and wife Jane of Greensboro, NC and four grandchildren; Matthew Lemonds of Nicholasville, KY, Mallory Lemonds of Spring Lake, NC, Violet and Nathan West of Panama City Beach, FL; many other nieces and nephews and a host of other family members and friends.
The family extends its sincerest and heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and care that she received from friends, neighbors, Betty’s caregiver; Carla Sutton and others with Senior Helpers and Gentiva Hospice.
The family will receive friends at New Hope Baptist Church on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Service will follow visitation at 12:00 pm. Burial will take place in the church cemetery following the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Adcock Funeral Home and Crematory in Spring Lake, NC.
