A student at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Middle School brought an unloaded gun, a pocketknife and an eyebrow razor blade to campus Friday, officials said in news releases.

No ammunition for the gun was found at the school, they said.

Deputy P. Graham, a school resource officer with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, was called to the school office at 1 p.m. Friday, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

A student reported to school administrators that a weapon had been seen on campus, which is at 2517 Ramsey St.

A search turned up an unloaded .380 handgun, the knife, and the razor blade, the release said.

A student at the school, who was not identified because the student is a juvenile, was charged with possession of a firearm on campus, the Sheriff’s Office release said.

The case is in the hands of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Anyone with information about it is asked to contact Youth Services Detective W. Lee at 910-677-5473.

In a news release, a Cumberland County Schools spokesman said school administrators responded appropriately.

“As soon as this information was reported to school officials, they immediately acted and notified law enforcement to lead the investigation and respond appropriately,” the spokesman said in a news release. “Thanks to the quick actions of the school and law enforcement, the situation was resolved without incident. The safety of all students and staff remains our top priority.”

The release said students should tell an adult if they see something suspicious. Students may use the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System to submit tips for follow-up by school officials. The hotline number is 844-572-9669. They may also visit the CCS website to access the reporting system.
