Four local veterans at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville were honored for their military service as part of the 75th anniversary of Women Veterans Day. Mary Hernandez, Judith Barnett, Pamela Jordan and Lula Washington were presented with pins and gifts to commemorate the integration of women into the armed forces, a news release said.

Jennifer Freeman, Region 4 manager of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, recognized the veterans during a ceremony at the home on June 12.

Women Veterans Day marks the signing of the  Women’s Armed Services Integration Act into law by President Harry S Truman in 1948.

Mary Hernandez joined the Army on Aug. 18, 1976, and served as an income maintenance specialist.

Judith Barnett served as an avionics navigation systems specialist in the Air Force for 21/2  years, joining on April 20, 1978.

Pamela Jordan joined the Army on Sept. 28, 1983, and served as an ammunition specialist for more than two years.

Lula Washington joined the Army on Aug. 18, 1980, and served as a petroleum supply specialist.

The families of the veterans were present for the ceremony, with members of the community also in attendance. All the veterans recognized were given a certificate of appreciation for their service to the nation, the release said.
