Nearly a week after the 15-year-old daughter of Fayetteville City Councilwoman Courtney Banks-McLaughlin was shot and killed, the Police Department has released little information surrounding the incident.

Coryonna Treasure Young, a 10th-grader at Seventy-First High School, died Oct. 21.

A memorial service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 5422 Raeford Road. It is open to the public.

Officers responded to the shooting just before 7 p.m. along the 2000 block of Maitland Drive, the Police Department said in a release. Police later said the shooting occurred inside a residence.

“The individuals involved were juveniles and known to one another,” police said in the release.

Sgt. Alpha Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the Police Department, said Wednesday that the department is “waiting for detectives on their end” to complete the investigation before releasing more information.

She declined to answer questions posed in an email Wednesday because "it's still under investigation."

Police Chief Gina Hawkins has not responded to requests for an interview to discuss recent shootings in the city.

“To the community: The family appreciates your prayers, concerns and continued support. My prayer is for the community to stop this senseless violence,” Banks-McLaughlin said in a statement to WRAL TV.

Brenda McNair, a member of the City Council, said she visited with Banks-McLaughlin on Tuesday night. McNair said her colleague is “doing very well. She seems good with the situation the way she’s internalizing, accepting her loss. She was around a lot of family. It was like a homecoming.”

The family home is not on Maitland Drive where the shooting occurred.

Banks-McLaughlin is in her second term on the City Council.
