When some people think of the library, they most likely think about a quiet place filled with books. While we still appreciate a calm environment with many wonderful books that can be checked out, where everyone feels welcome, there is more to the library than books and silence.
The library can be a place of fun and entertainment. While all eight Cumberland County Public Library locations offer programs for all ages, I want to focus on November happenings at Hope Mills Community Library, located at 3411 Golfview Road.
If you don’t have much time to spend at the library because you’re busy with your Thanksgiving plans, you can pick up a piece of origami paper and a set of instructions anytime during the month of November to make your own origami turkey at home. We would love for you to bring your turkey back to the library so we can see it and maybe put it on display.
International Games Day will be observed this year on Nov. 1. Come celebrate this day by playing card and board games from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 4. Games and activities like Uno, Sorry!, Connect 4, Battleship, Jenga and coloring sheets will be available. You may also bring your own games, as long as they are child- and family-friendly. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
November is also Native American Heritage Month. A member of the Coharie Indian Tribe will come to Hope Mills Community Library on from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 to talk about the rich history and culture of the tribe. Fascinating artifacts unique to this tribe will be shown, and the Friendship Dance will be followed by a craft project that can be enjoyed by all ages.
